Reading
Reading and writing have been hard for us. Slow. Painfully slow. Math is easy, entire weekly lessons done in a flash. Comprehension of listened to material was excellent. But writing has been such a struggle and reading has brought us both frustration. Even holding a pencil the 'right' way brought tears. We put it all on hold and made the decision to wait. We waited while friends excelled. We waited while strangers asked. We waited while many other children in Sunday school signed their name on their art. And I reminded myself and him that he is only four. But it was hard to wait and watch others make progress while our books sat unopened.
Reading and writing often feel like the litmus test for homeschooling - if you can do this you can do it and if you can't you better rethink yourself. Worries filled my anxious mind in weak moments. But I held on to a better promise, God's promise that He is sufficient where Jeremiah and I are not and that He brings to fruition what He calls. And He has called us to this way of schooling, I have no doubt.
So this fall we opened those books. And we took tiny steps. And just this past week something clicked and this boy is reading and writing and there are no tears. There is lots of work ahead to be done and we are far from calling anything a success but God was faithful. Faithful in the waiting and faithful now. I share this just to remind you if you're in a season of waiting don't be discouraged - God is working and wherever He has called you He is there with you.
